Strengthening the Young Generation's Financial Understanding, FMIPA UGM and Unila Hold a Financial Literacy Workshop
Bandar Lampung - Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Gadjah Mada University (UGM) together with FMIPA Lampung University (Unila) carry out community service activities in the form of Workshop Financial Literacy at Al-Kautsar High School Bandar Lampung on Tuesday, June 9 2026. This activity was held as an effort to increase students' understanding of the importance of financial management while introducing various applications of mathematics in life, including in the fields of actuarial and technology.
The activity began with remarks from the Deputy Head of Al-Kautsar High School for Curriculum, Tatang Bahtiar, S.Sc., M.Mat., who expressed his appreciation for the implementation of the program. According to him, this activity is a form of contribution from universities in supporting the improvement of the quality of education and insight of students at the secondary school level.
The next speech was delivered by the Head of the Community Service Team (PkM) FMIPA UGM, Dr. Indarsih, M.Sc. On this occasion, he emphasized that financial literacy is an important skill that needs to be instilled from an early age so that the younger generation is better prepared to face various economic challenges in the future.
As the main part of the activity, the participants received material from a number of academics from the Mathematics Department of FMIPA UGM. Dr. Adhitya Ronnie Effendie presented material on financial literacy and an introduction to actuarial science, which provided an understanding of risk management and professional opportunities in the actuarial field. Next, Prof. Dr. rer. Nat. Indah Emilia Wijayati, M.Si., together with two doctoral students in Mathematics FMIPA UGM, Annisa Dini Handayani, S.ST., M.Sc., and Felicia Servina Djuang, S.Si., M.Sc., delivered material on the theme “The Role of Mathematics in Technology and the Secrets Behind It”. This material discusses how mathematical concepts are an important foundation in the development of various modern technologies.
The series of activities then continued with an introductory session to the UGM FMIPA Mathematics Department presented by Dr. Indarsih, M.Sc., as well as an introduction to the Mathematics Department of FMIPA Unila by the Secretary of the Mathematics Department, Dr. Ahmad Faisol, M.Sc. Through this session, participants received information about higher education pathways and career prospects that can be pursued through the field of mathematics.
The workshop was also attended by Dr. Fitriani, M.Sc. as person in charge of activities at the University of Lampung, Prof. Wamiliana, Ph.D., Professor of Mathematics Department, FMIPA Unila, and Dr. Edwin Russel, lecturer at the Mathematics Department, FMIPA Unila.
By holding this workshop, FMIPA UGM and FMIPA Unila hope to strengthen collaboration with schools in increasing financial literacy as well as fostering interest in the younger generation in mathematics and its various applications in everyday life and the world of work.
