Computational Thinking-Based Mathematics Learning Workshop at Unila Improves the Competency of High School Mathematics Teachers throughout Lampung

Bandar Lampung, June 9, 2026 — The Mathematics Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at the University of Lampung (Unila) successfully held a Mathematics Learning Workshop on June 8–9, 2026. This event was the result of a collaboration between FMIPA at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), FMIPA Unila, the Lampung Provincial Education and Culture Office, and the Lampung Province Mathematics Subject Teachers Forum (MGMP). A total of 60 high school math teachers from various districts and cities in Lampung Province participated in this activity, which is part of the Community Service Program (PkM).

The workshop aimed to strengthen teachers' capacity in developing math learning that is adaptive to technological advances and 21st-century education needs. Through this event, participants gained insights and skills relevant to facing learning challenges in the digital era.

The opening of the event was carried out by the Dean of FMIPA Unila, Dr. Eng. Heri Satria, M.Si. Also attending the event were representatives from the Lampung Provincial Education and Culture Office, Marzuki, S.E., M.M., as well as the Chair of the Mathematics MGMP for Senior High Schools in Lampung Province, Zaidir Yulianto, M.Pd. The presence of these various parties reflects a shared commitment to supporting the improvement of mathematics education quality in Lampung Province.

The workshop featured several academics from the Mathematics Department of FMIPA UGM as speakers, including Dr. Indarsih, M.Si., Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Indah Emilia Wijayanti, M.Si., Prof. Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, M.Si., and Dr. Adhitya Ronnie Effendie, M.Sc. In addition, the event also involved Prof. Dr. Julan Hernadi, M.Si. from Ahmad Dahlan University Yogyakarta, as well as two doctoral students from UGM’s Mathematics Program, Annisa Dini Handayani, M.Si. and Felicia Servina Djuang, M.Si.

The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Fitriani, M.Sc., as the Coordinator of the Master's Program in Mathematics at FMIPA Unila, who acted as the person in charge of the activity at the University of Lampung. Meanwhile, Dr. Indarsih, M.Si. from Gadjah Mada University served as the head of the Community Service program, which was the leader for this activity.

The material presented focused on applying a computational thinking approach in mathematics learning. Participants were introduced to various learning strategies that integrate steps such as problem decomposition, pattern identification, abstraction, and algorithm development as a systematic thinking framework for solving mathematical problems. In addition to gaining conceptual material, teachers also participated in practical sessions using computational technologies like Python, Microsoft Excel, and GeoGebra. The use of these various devices is expected to support a more interactive, contextual learning process and enhance students' critical thinking skills as well as problem-solving abilities. Through this workshop, teachers are expected to be able to develop learning models that align with technological advancements, including artificial intelligence (AI), making math learning more innovative, relevant, and competitive in the digital era.

The series of activities also included the signing of an *Implementation of Agreement* (IA) between the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Lampung. The signing was carried out by the Dean of FMIPA Unila, Dr. Eng. Heri Satria, M.Si., together with a representative from the Dean of FMIPA UGM, namely the Vice Dean for Alumni, Collaboration, and Innovation, Prof. Dr. Fajar Adi Kusumo, S.Si., M.Si. This cooperation agreement is expected to further strengthen the collaboration between the two institutions in carrying out the three pillars of higher education, especially in the fields of education, research, and community service on a sustainable basis.
