The Mathematics Department at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at the University of Lampung is an integral part of the development of basic sciences within the university. Its existence is inseparable from the history of FMIPA's founding as a forum for strengthening the science field at the University of Lampung.

The foundation of FMIPA began in 1986 with the establishment of the FMIPA Preparatory Committee based on the Decree of the Rector of the University of Lampung Number 34/KPTS/R/1986. This effort was part of the university's strategic plan to develop a faculty focused on basic sciences as a foundation for scientific and technological advancement.

Officially, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Lampung, was established on November 15, 1995, based on Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 0334/O/1995. The establishment of this faculty marked a significant milestone in the development of science education at the University of Lampung.

Furthermore, the development of the mathematics field was marked by the establishment of the Mathematics Study Program through Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number 55/DIKTI/Kep/1998. This stage laid the initial foundation for the establishment of a more independent institution in the field of mathematics.

The Mathematics Department itself was officially established in 1999 through Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number 12/DIKTI/Kep/1999. Since then, the department has provided higher education at the Bachelor's (S1) level with a full semester credit system (SKS), and has played a role in the development of mathematical science, both theoretically and applied.

In line with evolving academic and professional needs, the Mathematics Department has continued to progress, including the opening of the Master's (S2) Program in Mathematics on September 24, 2012, through Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number 325/E/O/2012. This program is designed to strengthen research capacity and develop mathematical science, encompassing the fields of Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics.
